Joshua M. Edelglass is the Co-Director of Camp Ramah New England. His illustrations have appeared in a variety of newspapers and magazines, and he illustrated stories for both volumes of The Jewish Comics Anthology, published by Alternate History Comics. Josh illustrated the graphic novel José and the Pirate Captain Toledano, published by Kar-Ben in 2022. It’s a swashbuckling adventure story about Jewish pirates, and it’s also a story about connecting to one’s Jewish heritage. Josh’s artwork has appeared in numerous exhibitions, including Pow! Jewish Comics Art and Influence (Brooklyn, 2018), JOMIX — Jewish Comics: Art and Derivation (New York & Philadelphia, 2016); and The Jew as the Other (New York, 2015).

Creating a Graphic Novel
In this fun, interactive presentation, Josh walks participants through each step of the process of making a graphic novel like “José and the Pirate Captain Toledano”, from proposal to script to penciled pages to inks, lettering, and colors. This program can be structured as a presentation/discussion, and/or it can also include a cartooning component in which Josh uses a series of short fun cartooning exercises to teach the basics of comics illustration! This program can be structured to run for 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

A fun, creative workshop for teens/young adults/adults who are interested in comic book illustration! An introductory presentation provides an overview of the steps that go into creating a single comic book page: from script to pencils, inks, lettering, and colors. After that, participants design their own comic book page and workshop the results under Josh’s guidance. This program generally runs 2-3 hours.
